Jussie Smollett: Trump says Federal Bureau of Investigation and justice department will review case

Emanuel wants to bill the actor accordingly. Investigators alleged Smollett staged the attack with the hopes of gaining attention and advancing his career. Besides forfeiting his bond payment, Smollett also did community service, Magats said. "You can not have - because of a person's position - one set of rules applies to them and another set of rules apply to everyone else", Emanuel said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that if Smollett were not an actor with influence, he would have been held to a different standard. Tchen released a statement saying she was a friend of Smollett's family and knew Foxx "from prior work together".

The city is giving Smollett one week to cough up a "money order or certified cashier's check" for $130,106.15 - or just over double the $65,000 he reportedly makes per episode of "Empire".

In a press conference following the Cook County State's Attorney's office's decision, Smollett said he did not lie. "No", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson bluntly told reporters. "There were a team of lawyers, I was one of the members of that team, I did my job on my end of this matter, they did their jobs", said attorney Patricia Brown Holmes.

As we know, the Empire actor has had all charges against him dropped but that doesn't mean he's free of any expenses, according to the city of Chicago.

"The facts are clear". We will not try this case in a court of public opinion.

Smollett's legal team said on Wednesday that they were "weighing" the possibility of filing a lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department over the way that the case was handled.

The 61 pages were released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests from the media.

But she said Smollett had no idea who attacked him until the brothers were later identified by police.

Smollett's attorney said the two brothers who claim they worked with the actor to stage the January attack are lying. The Assistant State's Attorney appeared in court and dismissed the charges. Foxx has maintained that the evidence was solid and that "this office believed that they could prove him guilty". "And so if we can get to the same outcomes, if we get to the same measures of justice without going through the court process, we do that".

The lawyer joined Savannah Guthrie on the TODAY Show Thursday to discuss the dropped charges against her client.

While Smollett's supporters have cheered the turnaround, the development has been criticized by local officials, the Chicago Police Department and even a prosector who insisted that the star is off the hook, but not "innocent" in his eyes. Trump made the announcement on Twitter, calling the case "outrageous" and "an embarrassment".
