Dozens of Trump aides given security clearance despite warnings

Last month, Newbold told Democratic members of the US House Oversight and Reform Committee that senior White House officials had over-ruled security staff to give clearance to 25 individuals whose overseas links, conduct or past drug use had raised cause for concern.

Chairman Elijah Cummings commended White House whistleblower Tricia Newbold for defying her supervisor Carl Kline and keeping tabs on White House employees who were denied security clearances for a number of reasons, but then later overturned.

In a letter to the White House on Monday, Cummings said Newbold detailed the cases of three anonymous "senior White House officials" whose clearances career officials recommended should be denied, though the White House went ahead and granted clearances to two of the three unnamed individuals.

Explaining her decision to come forward, Ms Newbold said: "I would not be doing a service to myself, my country, or my children if I sat back knowing that the issues that we have could impact national security".

"But what I can say is that over the last few years that I've been here, I've been accused of all different types of things, and all of those things have turned out to be false", he said.

Cummings's panel has been investigating security clearances issued to senior officials including Kushner, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former White House aide Rob Porter.

MEE asked Cummings' office on Monday whether Newbold was specifically asked about Kushner during the 23 March interview and how she responded, but did not receive a response by time of publication.

"I'm terrified of going back", she is quoted as saying in the letter, which Mr Cummings sent to White House counsel Pat Cipollone.

Rep. Jim Jordan of OH, the committee's ranking Republican, said in a statement that Cummings' probe is a "partisan attack" and an "excuse to go fishing" through personnel files.

Jordan complained Cummings scheduled the meeting with her on a Saturday and didn't tell the Republicans until the day before.

Instead, she said, the White House retaliated.

First, she alleges that there were 25 clearances given to officials, against the recommendations of her and her colleagues.

On the issue of the citizenship question, Democrats say they want specific documents that will determine why Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross chose to add the question.

Newbold, an 18-year veteran of the security clearance process who has served under both Republican and Democratic presidents, said she warned her superiors that clearances "were not always adjudicated in the best interest of national security".

Barr has said he will issue a redacted copy of Mueller's full report by mid-April, but Democrats want it without redactions and have demanded it be given to them this week.

The denials by the career employees were overturned, she said, by more-senior officials who did not follow the procedures created to mitigate security risks.

And in order to do that, we have to issue subpoenas because people in this administration are not cooperating.
