All low earth satellites in reach of ASAT missile: DRDO chief

Bridenstine continued to say that this type of risk to humans in space, and low Earth orbit operations, was just not acceptable.

"The mission had been designed in a away that debris decays very fast and that minimal debris goes up", G. Satheesh Reddy, head of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation told reporters.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said on Monday that more than 400 pieces of orbital debris from the test had been identified, including debris that was travelling above the International Space Station - something he called a "terrible, bad thing".

The letter comes days after NASA chief Bridenstine in a town hall meeting criticized India's anti-satellite missile (ASAT) test because of the debris it generated in the space.

He said the first 10 days since the test were critical and that have passed, and in 45 days all debris will disintegrate.

The DRDO chief said the weapon has boosted the country's defence. "It was intentionally done at 280 km altitude so that debris decay fast", Dr. Reddy said, adding that the interception was created to hit at an angle so that minimal debris go up and also have minimal velocity. India has the capacity to hit target up to 1000 km and the test was intentionally held at a lower height.

Commenting on P Chidambaram's statement on Mission Shakti, Reddy said that a mission of this nature can't be kept secret.

He had earlier outlined, "We have a strong strategic partnership with India, and we will continue to pursue shared interests in space, in scientific and technical cooperation with India, and that includes collaboration on safety and security in space".

Many satellites, including the International Space Station, operate from much higher orbits.

Amid political debate on when the project was initiated, Reddy said the first discussion on the A-SAT test started in 2014 and the formal detailed presentation was made in 2016.

The US's surveillance and warning network was able to detect India's missile launch in low earth orbit which was aimed at one of its own satellites.

Reddy also said that there was no need for any more tests in this orbit now. Gen. David D Thompson said that as they became aware of the missile launch they notified all the satellite operators.
