Galaxy S10 with 5G Support Launches Today, But There’s a Catch

South Korea's telecommunications carriers on Wednesday, April 3, have turned on super-fast 5G mobile internet networks abruptly ahead of schedule in an attempt to ensure the country becomes the first in the world to launch the services.

This picture taken on April 3, 2019 shows the Galaxy S10 5G smartphones belonging to LG Uplus' first 5G subscribers, model Kim Min-young (L) and vehicle racer Seo Joo-won (R), during a launching ceremony in Seoul. The phone is launched at South Korea. Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network is the first commercial 5G network in the world that works with a 5G smartphone, said Verizon.

While security concerns over 5G networks using telecom equipment made by China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd have marred the buildup to the release of these services, South Korean telcos have tried to shrug them off.

The 5G mobile networks will bring smartphones near- instant connectivity, 20 times faster than the existing 4G that is allowing users to download entire movies in less than a second.

The launch was announced for Friday and even preceded that of US carrier Verizon, which also began on Wednesday to commercialize 5G service in Chicago and Minneapolis.

On Wednesday, SK Telecom showed off K-pop stars and an Olympic gold medallist as its first 5G customers.

Mobile carriers are competitively developing and introducing photorealistic live streaming services and virtual reality experiences to prove that 5G network is a change that is worth the cost of purchasing a new phone and plan.

Figures were not immediately available from SK Telecom, the market leader.
