President Trump Headed to Calexico for Border Wall Visit

The president later backed off that threat, saying he would give Mexico a "one-year warning" to stem the flow of illegal drugs entering our country from the southern border. Trump also announced that the US can't accept any asylum seekers or undocumented immigrants at the southern border because, quote: "Our country is full".

The President visited the Del Rio Sector to have a first- hand inspection of the wall.

Thanks for being with us. Talking to the soldiers here, Trump said that the problem of migrants is making a huge difference in our system and we cannot let this happen.

Trump sees his campaign against a "crisis" on the border as key to his 2020 reelection bid, and his trip to Calexico in California was meant to keep that message in the headlines.

The President's latest pronouncements are in response to a rising number of migrants, many of them families with children, travelling northward from Central America through Mexico and to the USA border.

"So turn around, that's the way it is", he said.

Though Trump, who has pulled a series of about-faces in recent days, walked away from this threat to close the border, he still intends to highlight conditions at the boundary with Mexico.

Mr Trump claimed many of those attempting to enter the United States are gang members and compared some of their efforts to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

Trump accused lawyers of coaching the migrants on what to say at the US-Mexico border to request asylum.

"They're apprehending people now by the thousands and bringing them back to their countries, bringing them back to where they came from".

Trump's Calexico visit came at the end of a tumultuous week that laid bare the president's growing frustration and limitations in controlling the United States southern border.

Vitiello, who has served as ICE's acting commissioner since June, had previously served as the chief of Border Patrol and deputy commissioner of Border Patrol's parent agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Trump says there is a national emergency from the influx of undocumented migrants and drugs and that drastic action is needed.

For a week, the president had repeatedly warned of a potential imminent closure of the border, resulting in an outcry from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who warned of dire economic consequences from disrupted commerce and travel. Its detention of foreigners, nearly all Central Americans, surged to 198,141 over the next year, from 127,149. "But we're going in a tougher direction". He blamed the border situation on the current immigration system and the Democrats' opposition to his border security measures.

Mr Trump is counting on seizing funds from other federal accounts and shifting them for the construction of about 725 kilometres of new barrier - a move being challenged in Federal Court because Congress has not given approval.
