US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigns

US President Donald Trump has announced Secretary of Homeland Security Kisrtjen Nielsen is leaving her position.

She went into a meeting with Trump at the White House in Sunday not knowing whether she'd be fired or would resign, and she ended up resigning, they said. But the source said, it is believed within the administration that Trump will be pushing for personnel changes. As it includes immigration and customs enforcement, her department is responsible for carrying out some of Trump's most contentious policies as he has sought to cut back on the number of Mexicans and Central Americans entering the United States without proper documentation.

Sources have said Nielsen has been on thin ice before.

The announcement she is leaving her post comes the day after the president visited the southern border.

At the Department of Homeland Security, Nielsen replaced Kelly, who left the department to take over as Trump's chief of staff. Trump announced Kelly's departure in early December, CNN reported, but Nielsen remained in her role. Nielsen served as Kelly's deputy when he joined the White House as chief of staff.

But at the agency that oversees border protection and immigration matters - Trump's signature issue - it was inevitable Nielsen would find herself within the President's crosshairs.

Nielsen, 46, is among the longest-serving Cabinet heads in the Trump administration, and leads the federal government's third-biggest department, the Los Angeles Times reported last week in an article on how Nielsen had - for 15 months - "succeeded in holding onto her job, defying numerous reports that Trump had made a decision to fire her". McAleenan said late last month that the U.S. was on pace to encounter more than 100,000 migrants in March alone, making it "the highest month since 2008". But she was also instrumental in ending the policy.
