Virginia Defeats Texas Tech to Secure School's 1st NCAA Men's Basketball Title

It just wouldn't be a Virginia win in the Final Four without some ensuing questions about the officiating.

The Virginia Cavaliers took down the Texas Tech Red Raiders in overtime to win their first NCAA Championship, and Bengals fan Kyle Guy was a huge part their success.

Hunter drained a 3-pointer with 12.9 seconds left to force the first overtime since 2008, when Mario Chalmers' miracle helped Kansas top Memphis in San Antonio.

Hunter missed seven of eight shots from the floor in the first half, but he flipped those results the rest of the game, connecting on seven of his last eight shots.

UVa. led by as many as nine the second half before the Red Raiders stormed back to take a three point lead with 22 seconds to play.

Kiwi basketballer Jack Salt made history by becoming the first New Zealander to win the NCAA men's college basketball title, as his Virginia beat Texas Tech 85-77.

The final 6 minutes of regulation was what made this game go from great to all-timer. They patiently answered every time, though the questions became more frequent once the Cavaliers finally got to the NCAA Tournament again.

The first half was all the game was chalked up to be - a defensive battle.

Texas Tech and Virginia gave us one of the best final nights of the season in the game's history. He's behind two other Texas Tech quarterbacks as well in Graham Harrell (No. 2, 15,793 yards) and Kliff Kingsbury (No. 7, 12,429 yards). The second half, they fell, and fell, and fell as he kept delivering lethal jabs into the Red Raiders' mid-section. "I just stayed aggressive and the shots started dropping". This was the first one since 2008, when Kansas' Mario Chalmers hit an iconic three-pointer at end of regulation against Memphis.

Virginia started the second half off hot. Guy previously made a pair of free throws for the Cavaliers to keep it a one-possession game. Texas Tech's Davide Moretti was driving up the court in transition and in traffic when De'Andre Hunter got a fingertip on the ball and knocked it out of bounds.

Guy scored 24 points including four huge threes.

The Cavaliers led 59-53 as Jerome called a timeout with 4:47 to go. It stems from an ESPN commentator in1992 saying Lubbock, the home of Texas Tech, has only the college and a tortilla factory.

The matchup for the NCAA championship game on Monday night is set.

Jerome's attempt to retake the lead rimmed out, and the Cavaliers fouled, sending Odiase to the line.

It made for a cocktail that was both sweet and intoxicating.

Their journey to the final has been a redemption story after a failed attempt previous year, when Virginia - who came into the 2018 tournament as a No. 1 seed - made history by becoming the first top-ranked team to lose to a No. 16 seed in the first round. The Final Four all-tournament team was Guy, Hunter, Jerome, Mooney and Culver.

Given the road to their one shining moment Monday, the Virginia Cavaliers plan to appreciate the national championship glow. I said, 'We're asking you to build on that foundation, and even at that house, that's going to be the hardest step.

"I'm so proud of these guys".

Despite this, Culver's title game was hard. "That's it, man. We're champions!" Hunter showed that he can come up big when it matters most.

Virginia came into March Madness as the top-ranked team, while Texas Tech ranked third. "Not a lot of people get along like we do, so to share this moment with them is unbelievable". A year after a historic defeat, Virginia came up with a historic victory Monday night.

"You have a scar, and it reminds you of that, but it's a memory, " Bennett said. "That's why I did what I did at the end", he said.
