Zach Johnson commits comical gaffe on the tee at The Masters

It hasn't been a great day at the Masters for former champion Zach Johnson.

The key reason that Johnson's mishit didn't count as a stroke comes down to two things - the contact was unintentional, and the ball was not yet in play.

Standing on the tee box at the iconic Azalea, the thirteenth hole of Augusta National, the 2007 champion sat at +2 and really needing to make some progress if he was to make the cut at the 83rd edition of golf's first major of the year.

"In a scene common to casual golfers but hardly ever seen at the professional level, Johnson sent his ball errantly out to the right after getting just a little too close while taking a practice stroke before teeing off".

The most impressive part of the sequence is that Johnson then stepped up and bombed a ideal drive down the middle of the fairway.

"Oh s--!" Johnson said immediately. "That's a first. I thought I'd done it all, but now I know I've done it all".

Johnson's actual drive went 285 yards down the middle of the fairway, and he knocked his approach shot on the green and two-putted for an easy birdie on the par-5. "I don't think I could do it again if I tried".

"That's something we're going to laugh about for a long time", said Matt Kuchar, who was playing with Johnson and Ian Poulter.

Johnson, whose round of 73 left him 3 over for the tournament, said he knew there wasn't a penalty involved because "it all comes down to intent".
