Buttigieg Formally Announces 2020 Presidential Run

"And I am running for President of the United States", he added.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced Sunday afternoon he would be joining the race for the presidency in 2020. "That's why I'm here today to tell a different story than 'Make America Great Again".

"Our marriage exists by the grace of a single vote on the U.S. Supreme Court", he said.

Buttigieg used portions of Trump's campaign slogan recognizing America's greatness but said he wants to move forward instead of trying to relive the past.

"The principles that will guide my campaign for president are simple enough to fit on a bumper sticker: freedom, security, and democracy", he continued.

Buttigieg, who often mentions his husband in speeches, said "take it from Chasten and me, you're not free if the county clerk gets to tell you who you ought to marry because of their idea, their political beliefs".

Two other big city mayors addressed the crowd.

"After weeks of slinging mug at Vice President Mike Pence, Pete Buttigieg picked a location for his announcement that's very revitalization was made possible because of support and state funding championed by Mike Pence when he served as our governor", said state GOP chair Kyle Hupfer.

Meanwhile, his husband, Chasten, has become a favorite of Democrats on social media, and Buttigieg has landed on the cover of national magazines, including NY magazine this week, with the headline "How about Pete?". "But as more and more people around the country begin to hear our bold vision for the future, more and more people are investing in this effort", Buttigieg said in a statement. Hickenlooper has said that Medicare-for-all should not be "a litmus test of what it takes to be a good Democrat".

The crowd broke into cheers: "Pete!".

Buttigieg announced in January that he was launching an exploratory committee for a 2020 presidential bid. The most glaring obstacle to Mayor Pete's becoming the youngest-ever major-party presidential candidate lies right there in his nickname: There's never been a candidate to hop straight from a mayor's office to the White House, let alone an official from a Rust Belt town of 102,245.

In a 36-minute speech, Buttigieg drew a strong contrast with President Donald Trump, suggesting there hasn't been enough honest discussion about the need to transform the nation's economy.

She included in that category former Vice President Joe Biden. Bernie Sanders of Vermont remain the front-runners.

Buttigieg quickly received more than 65,000 donations following a CNN Town Hall in March, earning him a spot in the first Democratic primary debate in June. He's reported raising about $7 million during the first quarter, a total that puts him roughly in the middle of the pack among those who have shared numbers ahead of Monday's Federal Election Commission disclosure deadline. Following Buttigieg was Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Beto O'Rourke, Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker.

"There are enormous minefields and hurdles to running as an openly LGBTQ candidate, and so far, Mayor Pete has gracefully leapt over them on the world's largest political stage", Parker said.

"Imagine Xi having to meet Buttigieg and his husband", said Billy Zhao, a gay Chinese millennial who has lived in Washington on and off for the past eight years.

There were thousands of people just like Jessica in the audience traveling across the country to catch a glimpse of history from Manhattan to OR to Denver to right here in South Bend.

"We stand on the shoulders of optimistic women and men", he said.

"He's so familiar, and suddenly we're seeing him on the national spotlight", Wetherall said. He graduated from Harvard University, was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford and speaks seven languages.

"Pete has a quiet passion", says Jacquie Bontrager-McCann, a 33-year old director of member experience at a credit union who supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary but drove three hours from central in to hear Buttigieg speak.
