Do You Need a Measles Booster?

The US exceeded that record high in less than four months, highlighting a very concerning outbreak originating from clusters of unvaccinated people. Those who attempt to tie the rise to Southern-border-crossing immigrants do so by ignoring the epidemiological realities of a world that sees one billion people cross global borders every year, sometimes into and out of countries with low vaccination rates or ongoing outbreaks.

But outbreaks have surfaced throughout the country over the past few months, affecting more than 700 people.

Children under the age of 5 are not the only ones who should be concerned about immunity. In total, unvaccinated individuals make up well over 70 percent of the cases on record in 2019.

"When measles is imported into a community with a highly vaccinated population, outbreaks either don't happen or are usually small".

The largest US outbreaks are occurring in Rockland County and Brooklyn, N.Y. Washington state had over 70 cases in early 2019, though authorities recently declared the outbreak over in the Pacific Northwest, as there have been no new infections in over six weeks. And in California, hundreds of college students were quarantined last week after one student with measles attended classes on three days while contagious at the University of California at Los Angeles, and another contagious person spent hours at the library of California State University, Los Angeles.

This year's record-setting outbreak threatens that achievement.

Officials said the increase in cases is the largest since 1994, including 78 reported in the past week.

In fact, Austin Regional Clinic no longer accepts unvaccinated children because measles is known as one of the most contagious diseases. "Vaccine-preventable diseases belong in the history books, not in our emergency rooms".

Today's alert for the West Midlands comes as the United States is gripped in a measles crisis.

"Because we keep getting these from outside the United States, we remain at risk", Esper said. "If you do not have written documentation of MMR vaccine, you should get vaccinated", the CDC states on its website.

There are no treatments and no cures for measles, said CDC Director Robert Redfield.

For healthy children, a case of measles is unlikely to even be life-threatening.

There have been no deaths reported as as result of the outbreak.

Measles can be deadly, especially for babies and young children. Measles may cause pregnant woman to give birth prematurely or have a low-birth-weight baby.

Ed Day, a Republican who is the top elected official in Rockland County, on Monday joined Democratic state lawmakers to urge quick passage of a measure to eliminate religious exemptions for required vaccinations. One in 10 children with measles will develop ear infections, which can lead to permanent hearing loss. Two doses of the shot are about 97% effective at preventing the measles, while one dose is about 93% effective, the CDC says.

Esper said that measles was declared eradicated in the U.S.in 2000 because of a "successful vaccination campaign that started back in 1963". The recent outbreaks have tended to arise in close-knit communities whose members are known for traveling overseas in countries where measles is much more common than in the U.S. There was a big measles outbreak in Minnesota in 2017 among Somali immigrants, and over 600 cases of measles have been confirmed in 2018 and 2019 in parts of NY that are home to large Orthodox Jewish families.
