April report shows athletes' scores remain steady

To compete in the 2019-20 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year April.

Based on the single-year April scores, OR football coach Mario Cristobal, men's basketball coach Dana Altman and women's basketball coach Kelly Graves will receive bonuses of $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, had their teams received single-year scores of 985 OR greater.

Any student-athlete receiving athletic aid in a varsity sport can earn up to four points per year for being academically eligible and remaining enrolled in the institution.

The most recent statistics, released Wednesday, show the overall four-year score (ending with the 2017-18 fiscal year) matched last year's record high of 983 and that the four-year scores in football, men's basketball and women's basketball also matched last year's marks.

Football's April score jumped from 978 in 2016-17 to 993 in the most recent period. A team's total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's April score. The program had ideal single-year scores in the two previous reporting periods under former coach Mike Anderson. The single-year score and the majority of the multi-year score came during the tenure of Eric Musselman, who spent four seasons at Nevada before he was hired as Arkansas' basketball coach last month.

April scores also come into play for football teams come bowl season. UO football's four-year April is eighth in the Pac-12 with Washington (991), Utah (989), Stanford (986) and Arizona State (980) as the only Pac-12 schools with multi-year scores above 980 in football. The HBCUs' single-year number dropped one point, to 960, but remain up from 918 in 2010-11.

In addition to the men's basketball team, the men's swimming and diving team and the women's volleyball team also posted flawless April scores. The 2017-18 term was the first full year under current coach Mike Neighbors.

Neighbors' former program, Washington, had a multi-year score of 984 in the latest report, which encompasses the majority of his final three years at the school. The program has a multi-year score of 956.

Rates are an average of each school's performance for the last four years.

This year, 22 teams face penalties, including eight facing postseason bans.

Every team at OSU is above the APR's minimum threshold to compete in NCAA championships (a four-year score of 930).
